Why "Free To A Good Home" Ads Are A Bad Idea

Your dog or cat has just given birth to a litter of sweet, innocent baby critters. You want to keep them all but you can't. You have to find people to adopt them. For the longest time, people have been placing ads in the paper offering kittens or puppies "free to a good home". Times have changed. Announcing to the public that you have free puppies or kittens can result in a painful death for them.

There are people called "bunchers" that scour the want ads and the internet looking for free kittens or puppies. They pretend that they will provide a good home. Instead they sell the animals to research facilities for painful experimentation and death. Another danger of giving away puppies and kittens is that some people will take them to feed to other animals, such as snakes and alligators. Thirdly, dogfighters are always in search of bait for their dogs to maim and kill.

To prevent this from happening, charge an adoption fee of at least $25. If anyone questions it, tell them it is "earnest money" to ensure that they really want the animal for a pet. Let them know there are bad people out there and you are just protecting the litter from harm.

**As an added bonus, you can use the adoption fee money to get your pets spayed and neutered.
