Winter Weather Care For Outside Pets

Winter time temperatures can be deadly for outside pets if they dont have proper shelter, dry bedding, and food and water. These four basic care essentials are necessary for their survival. Without them their chances in sub zero degrees are very slim.

Proper shelter is somewhere that they can go to get out of the wind, rain and snow. When using a dog house, it should have four sides and a floor up off the ground. The small opening to enter and exit should always be facing south, with a canvas flap cover to keep out the wind. Bedding should be straw or something simular to absorb any moisture. Never use blankets in the winter, because any moisture can turn wet blankets into solid ice.

Food and water also keeps your pet warm and healthy. When an animal suffers from weight loss in cold temperatures, they cant maintain body heat. Make sure their food is kept dry and they have water everyday. It's a good idea to fill their bowl with hot water twice a day so it wont freeze as fast. The myth that hot water freezes faster than cold is completely false.

Also, when the temperatures drop below zero, all animals should be brought inside at night.

By making sure these basic care needs are met, your pet will stay happy and healthy through the winter months.
