People who commit horrific acts of
cruelty to companion animals usually spend NO
time in jail. They get probation, community service, fines,
suspended sentences or concurrent sentences. Why? Because the victim was "just an
animal". Animal abuse is practically legal in
the United States but most people aren't aware of it. The problem is that
the laws are weak and those enforcing them tend to let animal abusers
off with a slap on
the wrist. If
someone sets a dog on fire, impales a kitten, throws puppies out the
window of a moving vehicle, drowns a cat, etc., we believe they should go
directly to jail. Don't you? Anyone who could do such things to an animal
is likely to commit violent crimes against people too.
The Coalition for
Animal Justice is dedicated to fighting cruelty against
companion animals. Our goal is to ensure that people who commit
violent crimes against companion animals go to prison. We monitor cruelty cases nationwide
and urge police, judges and prosecutors to take animal cruelty cases seriously. We
are working for a federal law to impose
a mandatory 5 year prison sentence for anyone convicted of aggravated animal
cruelty. Four Legged
